I skimmed that book.

To ‘skim’ a book means to read it rapidly, noticing names, places, dates, and maybe some other facts.  Persons get a very limited understanding when reading that way. The more complicated things in a book cannot be learned only by skimming it.  Sometimes when a person has much to read, though, ‘skimming’ is their only option.
