Hold your horses.

In the old days, when cannons were fired in battle, the horses would get scared and run.  Soldiers were told to ‘hold the horses’.  In the days before cars, travel was by horse or horse-pulled wagon or coach.  If a person was hurrying, they were told to ‘hold your horses’.  Today, ‘hold your horses’ means someone should wait.
