Caught in the fray or above the fray

A fray means ‘battle’ or ‘argument’. These figures of speech usually are used today to describe disagreements or arguments. ‘I got caught in the fray’ means the person got involved in the argument between other persons. ‘I kept above the fray’ means that the person was able to avoid getting involved.
