This phrase goes back to the mid 1300’s. It refers to something that a person cannot coax life out of. A doornail was the metal that was used on old European doors when someone would knock to see if anyone was at home. Now, it refers to machinery or equipment that no longer works. ‘It’s as dead as a doornail’.
