This unusual figure of speech began approximately 200 years ago in The USA. Why or how it started is unknown. Cats, however, take many short rests or sleep in different places not associated with ‘bed’. They can sleep almost anyplace. A ‘catnap’ refers to a person who takes a short sleep, but not in their bed (often in a chair). “I took a catnap after lunch.”
