To get the short shrift
A ‘shrift’ is the prayer that is made by a priest after a person makes confession of their sins. In the 17th Century, priests were asked to give criminals a short shrift, or prayer, before the criminal was executed. Today, the phrase means to receive little consideration about something. “The suggestion was given the short shrift by the company’s owner.”
