To coin a phrase

This figure of speech used to mean that a new phrase had been created.  Today, the figure of speech has a different meaning.  If someone says something that has been said many times before, another person could comment ‘…to coin a phrase’.  He noticed that what was said is a ‘cliché’.  In other words, ‘we’ve heard this before’.
