This popular figure of speech was spoken in a famous American movie.  Something ‘makes your day’, if it is the best thing that happens to you on that day.  Today, the figure of speech is used to respond to a threat made by a person who has less authority (especially if a boss needs a good reason to fire or discipline an employee.)
