There are a variety of uses for this figure of speech.  Some of those uses are not appropriate for use on our website.  But, the most traditional use comes from world history.  On an old map, an ‘X’ would mark the place where a pirate buried treasure.  So, today, ‘X marks’ the spot’ means ‘this is where something is located’.
