Bury the hatchet

This figure of speech comes from the history of Native Americans.  A ‘hatchet’ is a small weapon like an axe that can be carried in one hand.  To end a conflict, the chief (leader) of one tribe (group) would bury his hatchet.  In common use, ‘He buried the hatchet’ means that a person ended a disagreement with someone.
