Give me a break

This figure of speech has several uses.  It can mean that you experienced enough of something: ‘Give me a break.  He is always late when there is a lot of work to do.’  It can be used when things don’t get the desired result: ‘The client didn’t accept our offer.’  You might reply, ‘Give me a break.  We worked hard on that proposal.’
