This figure of speech is often used in a restaurant or a drinking establishment.  It refers to one person offering to buy everyone at the table, or everyone who is with him, a drink.  ‘I’ll buy the next round’.  Or, ‘waiter, I’d like to buy another round for everybody at the table’.
