Get my foot in the door

This figure of speech comes from the experience of salespersons that go from house to house to sell something.  When the homeowner opens the door, if the salesperson can get their foot inside so that the door cannot close, then he has an opportunity to sell the product.  ‘If I can get my foot in the door, I’ll have a chance’.
