A wolf is the largest animal of the dog ‘family’. It lives primarily in the Northern Hemisphere in North America and Asia and has a reputation for eating quickly.  In American English a person who eats very rapidly is said to be wolfing his food, or wolfing down his food.  It is considered to be poor manners to wolf down food.
