In the countryside, the ‘high’ road is the road or path that is probably less muddy, and the road which allows a better view of the area.  In life, a person is given choices.  If a person decides to do the right thing, or to behave appropriately, that person is said to be taking the high road.  Taking the low road is to do the opposite.
