This figure of speech comes from the sport, baseball.  The pitcher throws the ball.  The batter has to try and hit the ball.  The batter carefully watches the ball before he tries to hit it.  In other sports, it is important to catch a ball.  In life, if a person is not careful with what they are doing, the person probably will not be successful.
