We have to go back to square one.

In many ‘board games’, the very beginning of the game is called ‘square one’.  Sometimes, because of the rules of the game, or because of ‘chance’, a person has to start the game over.  In life or in work, if a person has to go back and begin something again, it can be said that they had to go back to square one.
