The idiom refers to something or someone you love, cherish, or hold dearer than anyone or anything else.  The idiom goes as far back in history as old English from the late 800’s.  The idiom was later used in 1590 by William Shakespeare in one of his plays.  The idiom first appeared in the Bible in the King James Version of 1611.
